Summary: Reporting to the CEO/Port Director, the CCO/PAO will be responsible for facilitating and leading the Port’s Business Development, Government Relations and Community Outreach teams. Critical accountabilities include strategic planning for future development, researching and understanding local, regional and global market trends, and maintaining and developing business opportunities in support of expanding and diversifying the Port’s base of business. This position also oversees the development of community engagement and government relations advocacy strategies.
Some key accountabilities include:
Oversight and responsibility for the work of the Business Development, Public and Government Relations and Community Outreach teams.
Planning, supervising and evaluating the work of staff and developing, implementing and actively managing work plans to achieve departmental mission, goals and performance measures. Actively managing team performance and assessing training needs for staff.
Building and maintaining annual budget for the Commercial and Public Affairs Department.
Leading business development team to develop strategies for maintaining and building relationships with commercial partners and overseeing the department’s marketing strategy.
Proactively locating and proposing new business opportunities and screening potential opportunities by analyzing market conditions, deal requirements, financial implications, operational considerations, port priorities and equity investments.
Enhancing the visibility and reputation of the Port through proactive marketing and by meeting and exceeding customer needs.
Negotiating agreements and memoranda of understanding with existing and new Port customers, community partners, and other key stakeholders.
Supporting the CEO/Port Director on policy directives and government relations at the local, state, and federal levels.
Location: Port Hueneme, CA (Oxnard/Ventura County)
Compensation: $170-205K base (depending on experience) + excellent benefits.
Experience Requirements: At least 10 years’ experience in sales/business development in the ocean cargo transportation or broader supply chain industry with at least five years in a management or supervisory capacity. The ideal candidate will have direct experience developing new business opportunities for a port or related entity and background in strategic planning for future development. The candidate will have a broad and deep knowledge of market factors affecting port business activities and extensive experience negotiating contracts and business partnerships. Exceptional interpersonal, leadership, management, communication, critical thinking and presentation skills are a must. Exposure to public/government affairs and community relations is a plus.
