The Port of Long Beach is one of the world’s busiest seaports and is a leading gateway for international trade. Founded in 1911, it has grown to more than 3,200 acres and moves more than $180 billion in goods each year. The Port is the second busiest seaport in North America. If combined with its next-door neighbor, the Port of Los Angeles, the San Pedro Bay port complex would rank among the top eight busiest container ports in the world. East Asian trade accounts for more than 90 percent of Long Beach shipments with the top trading partners including China, Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong and Taiwan.
The Security Services Division provides and coordinates asset protection, enforcement, security and emergency management systems for the Port and its tenants, the public and government entities so that a safe work environment exists and meets regulatory requirements. This group is comprised of approximately 100 employees and the division is part of the Commercial Operations Bureau.
This is one of two Assistant Director positions in the Security Division. Reporting to the Director of Security Services, the Assistant Director is a key leader and member of the Security Executive team. This position has oversight for all or some of the Harbor Patrol functions, operations and readiness, coordination of security functions with Port partner agencies, cybersecurity, grant funding and administration and emergency management functions.
QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE: Seven years of progressively responsible management experience, preferably having led a diverse team in an operational environment. Experience in private sector, or federal/state law enforcement or public safety is preferred. The ideal candidate will have direct senior level program management experience and extensive interface with government agencies (local, state, federal) and business partners, i.e. customers/tenants and other stakeholders.
The ideal candidate will have experience working in complex jurisdictional and operational settings and be a proven leader with exceptional collaborative and communication skills and high-level political acuity. He or she will have had recent experience managing a substantially sized team. Must have experience interviewing, hiring and mentoring staff to meet ongoing challenges and create a world-class organization.
