Work closely with the Director of SSEC, Metro Cruise LLC, Senior Management, Operations Leaders, Risk Management, Insurance, Terminal Managers, Superintendents, and others to identify potential and existing hazards, and to design, propose and implement resolutions to same
Routinely and as directed visit Company locations throughout the United States west coast east and gulf coasts) to conduct, record and report on safety inspections and survey occupational conditions of vessel operations, terminal operations, equipment and maintenance programs
Assisting operations management with environmental regulatory compliance company-wide
To learn and to be familiar with facility Security Plans and security training in each marine terminal managed by the Company
Ensure Company meets Air Quality Management District (AQMD) California Air Resources Board (CARB) requirements in California and related federal, state and local regulations in other operating states including, but not limited to , storm water permitting, Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasures plans (SPCC), Hazardous Waste Management Permits
Routinely communicate with all personnel at all facilities regarding safety matters, to include designing, and conducting safety training courses
Act as a resource for safety compliance enforcement, by monitoring and documenting compliance and violations.
Conduct Terminal safety meetings. Ensure local safety meetings are held and documented as required
Ensure all site testing for air pollution, noise levels, and others are conducted in accordance with applicable regulations or as needed. Coordinate, as needed, with industrial hygienists
Ensure the Company IIPP plan is current, compliant with all applicable laws, and properly distributed to all stakeholders
Where needed, recommend procedures, practices and policies based on safety Audits
Conduct and/or manage accident investigations, ensuring accident reporting is timely, comprehensive, and useful Coordinate with Insurance Department, claims staff providing information as needed. Report incidents to various state and federal agencies as needed
Prepare various reports, including statistical injury, trend analysis, and other reports as needed
Monitor and make aware of pending and current legislative changes affecting Company’s safety program(s) Participate in safety gangway talks, industry safety meetings local or national, reporting on same
Maintain short- and long-term safety plans, including active participation in preparation of Company contingency plan(s) as appropriate
Maintain and report on Pacific Coast Marine Safety Code issued by PMA-ILWU on safety in the West Coast waterfront; and other similar safety documents related to unions on the East Coast and Gulf Coast
Work weekends and holidays as needed. Carry Company cell-phone for 24-hour “on-call” duties
Perform other functions as assigned
Education and/or Work Experience:
4-year college degree in applicable field of study
Knowledge of state and federal OSHA, U.S. Coast guard regulations, Pacific Coast Marine Safety Code, and other safety regulatory requirements for the maritime industry
Minimum 5 years of experience in a safety managerial capacity, preferably with the maritime--stevedoring community with extensive union interaction
Advanced computer skills in all Microsoft office products, including Excel, Word, Access, and PowerPoint.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Certification in CPR and First Aid, (preferably at the instructor level)
Valid driver’s license, with an appropriate driving record
Able to obtain a Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC)
Able to travel extensively
