The Deputy Executive Director advises and supports the Executive Director and the Port Commissioners on policy and oversight, development and implementation of the Port’s strategic plan, overall Port management, business development, and internal and external communications. This position is responsible for the operation and profitability of maritime commerce and log yard operations. Depending on experience, the position may also have responsibility for real estate leasing and industrial development and airport operations. This position will collaborate with Port stakeholders across the various operational sectors to deliver cost effective solutions and lead a team that is focused on providing exceptional service. Success in this position requires strategic planning, business analysis, discretionary judgement, and interpersonal and negotiating skills.
Maritime Manager (staff includes Operations Supervisor with 2 full-time security staff and 4.3 FTE part-time security staff), PABH Marina agent, JWM Harbor Master with 2 staff)
Log Yard Manager (ILWU staff includes Log Yard lead and 5 staff)
Potential Direct Reports: Real Estate and Aviation Manager (staff includes 1 Property Administrator)
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities Required:
Ability to take initiative to solve problems within the bounds of Port statutes, policies and expected quality of service.
In-depth knowledge of the maritime (marine terminals, small & large marine trades, boat yards and marinas), forest products, advanced wood products, log yard (including aquatic storage, rafting and round booming), real estate and airport operations and their associated industries, trends and policy issues.
Knowledge of public sector procedures and the ability to function within a public agency environment.
Must be able to manage and lead a diverse work team toward the accomplishment of common goals in a highly collaborative, yet fast paced and stressful environment.
Ability to effectively present complex information to tenants, customers and the public.
Must have impeccable customer service skills and strategies.
Ability to present business cases to the public and to the Board of Commissioners in open public meetings.
Ability to conduct business outreach and develop and implement strategic initiatives.
Skilled in analyzing a situation, assessing alternative solutions and recommending an effective course of action.
Ability to perform complex business calculations such as net present value and internal rate of return in order to analyze business and financial opportunities.
Ability to analyze extremely complex leases, contracts, agreements and documents.
Ability to travel, including internationally, as needed.
